This is a nifty printer. We were surprised at the quality of the photos it was able to print. You do need a Samsung manufactured printer cartridge and paper in order to get the thing working but we will be on the lookout for the old ‘no-name’ brand cartridge. However it is possible to purchase the cartridge and 120 sheets of 6×4 paper for around $50-$60 which makes it only 50 cents a print. Not too bad.
It has everything you’d expect for a small printer, including an LCD screen and it’s pictbridge capable, meaning you can just plug your camera in direct from it’s USB cable. Alternatively it is equipped with a card reader so you can insert your memory stick or SD card into the unit and print that way. The LCD screen gives you a chance to have a look at what your going to print, as well as do some basic editing such as cropping or adding some simple effects (e.g., sharpening, blurring).
That is a very nice feature.
The photos look very professional, and we will be very interested to see how long they last on the old pin up board in the kitchen, which is really the only photo album we have. Early printed photos from inkjets barely lasted a month or two in the harsh environment of the kitchen. But the ones that were put there a couple of weeks ago when we got the printer are looking okay.
It’s a reasonably quick printer. We found the a photo was delivered to us in under a minute. You need to keep a little bit of space around the unit as the paper cartridge holder and the paper itself moves through the printer and appears out the back of the printer several times as it runs through the different ink colour layers. The final layer is a thermal layer, which is the important part – that should make the prints reasonably resistant to oxidisation meaning they won’t fade if exposed to air (like on the kitchen photo album). Well not for a few years anyway. Keep the photos in a proper album, and they should last a lifetime.
So, it seems if you’re looking for a really portable printer this could be worth considering. It is available for around $125 – $199 on the web so shop around for the best deal. We have had to wait some time for a new order of paper to arrive so remember to order cartridge and paper supplies early. It would be awful to be caught short when you have family and friends lining up to get their copy of your latest family portrait!
