Speech Recognition and Vista – an update

Hmm, what was that about having time up one’s sleeve. Sorry to have been a bit quiet over the past month or so. But I’m back. Just a quick update on the speech recognition in Vista. I have to admit that I’m still struggling with it for word processing. In fact I went back to Naturally Speaking for word processing as the accuracy was greater.

I’m not sure what happened really but Vista just seemed to stop being accurate on the speech recognition all of a sudden, and no amount of restarting or fiddling around seemed to help. So it was great to be able to fall back on Naturally Speaking. [more]

I haven’t really had much more time to play around with it just lately. But I’m still holding out some great expectations for speech recognition in Vista, and when I have more time I hope that I can have another go. I’m unsure as to what went wrong, but it just seemed to stop learning.

On balance, the interfaces are fairly similar and now I’m in the unfortunate position of not always knowing which command is from which program! Nevertheless I stumble on through.

I do think that the future is positive for speech recognition software whether it’s built into the operating system or a stand alone program. I’m very much looking forward to trying out Microsoft’s offering for Windows Mobile, but don’t really have time in the moment to look like a goose as I shout commands to my PDA in an effort to get it to work. But as soon as I do I’ll let you know what I think!
