Pamela 3.0 is calling and adding value to Skype

We have just become aware of a great program that adds features to Skype that really increase functionality and usefulness of VoIP. The best and most useful feature is a voicemail function, so people calling you on Skype can leave a message. Just like a normal answering machine.

You can also record calls so if you are doing an interview over Skype you can make it into an audio file right there and then as you go.

Best of all, the basic version of Pamela is gratis. This is its best feature, and the creators have sensibly done this with the view that once you’re hooked on Pamela you’ll want to upgrade to the Standard, Pro of Business packages which bring even more functionality to your Skype.

The best thing about all of this is that some of the Pamela features were offered by Skype but for a fee. Voice messaging on Skype required you to buy a Skype-in account, and while this is competitively priced, if you only used Skype occasionally it didn’t really make much sense. Pamela has addressed all of that, and in an oh so elegant way.

My only gripe with Pamela is the color of desktop and tray icons. The pink is a little too much. It stands out too much on the desktop. It would be very nice to be able to change the color scheme of the program, but this is really only a small gripe. So please, can the graphics people at Pamela perhaps tone down their pink a little?

There is some added functions such as contact birthday notifications. I haven’t had a chance to give those a try, but if you don’t have a way of getting notifications (I use PocketBreeze and Outlook on a PDA) for birthdays then this may be a useful feature. It would be good to be able to turn such unwanted features off on menus and sidebars but again, I’m not going to be losing sleep over this.

So, all in all, an excellent program that has been realised well. I’ll keep playing around with it to see what other features are available.
