It’s been a while between posts but I have been obsessing with the latest toy in the collection, Sony Ericsson’s new P1i. Having been an Atom O2 owner, I was concerned about moving across to Symbian UIQ3 operating system from Windows Mobile 5. Not that I though that WM5 on the Atom was anything to write home about.

However, the first couple of weeks of testing this phone have been rather pleasing. It is by no means perfect, but the P1i does have an awful lot going for it. For a start, it hasn’t crashed once. That’s right, it hasn’t crashed once, even after I have added and uninstalled different types of software. This is remarkable, particularly for anyone who is used to WM5’s temper.

So as far as I’m concerned that is a huge plus. The drawback of course is the applications aren’t quite as visually pleasing but for someone who was restarting the Atom at least a couple of times a week, it is a revelation. A PDA that doesn’t crash is a PDA that is reliable when you most need it.

Although the P1i is more phone that PDA, and frankly that’s what I was looking for. The Atom O2 didn’t really cut it as a dedicated phone and happily the phone functionality of the P1i is very good. There is plenty more to tell about this full featured phone. Too much in fact for only one review, so I’m going to do this over a few days.

The inital verdict on the P1i is positive. Symbian UIQ3 is a very different look and feel to WM5 but on the face of it much more stable than its Windows competitor.
